Looping video showcasing the completed backyard transformation in Framingham, MA.

This Framingham property sits within a sensitive and dynamic landscape featuring wetlands, a brook, a pond, steep grade changes, and a canopy of mature native specimen trees. Following the removal of an existing rear deck to make way for a new home addition, the homeowners envisioned a reimagined backyard into a multi-functional outdoor environment.

Their goals were both practical and experiential, creating a series of connected outdoor spaces for dining, relaxing, yoga, live music, and entertaining. The design needed to balance significant grading challenges and conservation restrictions while maintaining a natural, soft-edged aesthetic integrated with the surrounding ecosystem. Close coordination with the city’s Conservation Committee ensured all work respected wetland buffers and environmental guidelines.

Process

  • Designing with Site Constraints & Opportunity: The landscape was designed as a multi-level outdoor environment organized around steep grades, wetland adjacency, and mature tree cover. The master plan established a sequence of connected outdoor spaces for dining, gathering, relaxation, and flexible use.
  • Grading & Structural Transformation: The backyard was reshaped to establish functional elevation changes and improve circulation between the upper lawn, driveway, and lower patio areas. Retaining walls and stepped transitions manage grade while maintaining a natural, cohesive flow through the site.
  • Permeable Hardscape & Outdoor Living Spaces: Two primary patios were constructed using permeable bluestone systems to support drainage and long-term performance in a sensitive environmental context. These spaces serve as the central outdoor areas for dining, entertaining, and everyday use.
  • Circulation & Material Expression: Steps connect the site’s elevation changes, providing movement between key outdoor spaces. The homeowners selected salt and pepper granite for the primary step elements, introducing a durable material contrast that complements the natural stone palette and planting design.
  • Structural Stone & Site Character: Retaining walls and strategically placed boulders reinforce grade transitions while contributing to a naturalistic, grounded landscape character. These elements help define space without creating rigid boundaries.
  • Planting & Soft Landscape Integration: Planting beds were designed to soften hardscape edges and reconnect the built environment to the surrounding landscape. Native-leaning, pollinator-supporting plantings reinforce the property’s ecological context.
  • Landscape Restoration: Disturbed areas were restored and re-established to ensure the landscape transitions seamlessly from construction into a cohesive finished environment.
